Brave Search vs SearXNG

Brave Search beats SearXNG 7.1 to 5.3 on our four-agent test panel, winning 4 of 4 agents head to head. Brave Search: free tier available. SearXNG: free tier available. Facts last verified October 7, 2026.

What actually differs

Brave Search is one search engine with its own crawler and index, run by Brave: free, no tracking profile, AI answers on top, and the same experience on every device. It also sells a search API, so many tools use its index under the hood.

SearXNG doesn't index the web at all. It is open-source metasearch software that sends your query to many engines at once (Brave can be one of them) and merges the results without passing on who you are. You self-host it or use a public instance, and quality depends on that instance.

  • Pick Brave Search if you want one private engine that works out of the box, with its own results and AI summaries.
  • Pick SearXNG if you want to run your own instance, choose the upstream engines, and keep everything under your control.
